There is nothing more frustrating than getting an idea to create something only to spend most of the time trying to find all the supplies! I now create my art and craft in a minimal space compared to several years ago when I had an ample studio space the size of a two-car garage in my former home. I now have all my art and craft supplies in one spare bedroom of my much smaller house, and I have had to come up with ways to organize everything into the little space. I have learned some smart ways to organize from my friend Carol Duvall who's inspiring craft room overlooking Lake Michigan was the envy of many! I purchased many Iris Carts and storage bins to keep my growing supply collection under control, but I still found myself searching for items. Where did I put that? The question of the day! Getting OrganizedWorking in a smaller space meant I had to become very organized. After much trial and error, I have come up with a system that has worked for me. When I first moved into my current home in early spring a couple of years ago, I chose a sunny north light location with large windows three-quarters of the way around the room. It would be my art studio. I thought this room would be the perfect place to paint because of the ample lighting. I chose a dark spare bedroom with a small window to contain my office and craft supplies and began the organizational effort. Once the intense Arizona summer was in session, North Light studio became uncomfortably hot. Now, I know why they call it a sunroom! In the winter, it was too chilly. I had to abandon the sunny studio and bring all the art supplies into the small, dark craft room office space. I affectionately call it the "Creative Cave." Oh, I forgot to mention, I make all my how-to videos and host our Crafting Club events in this room! Equipped with a bathroom and a shower, I can sequester myself for days in my creative cave. I may come out for the occasional meal or visit with my husband and cat. My little studio space is still a work in progress, but I find myself searching less and creating more. Craft Room TourFor Tuesday's live event, I will take you on a guided tour into my little craft room. We will peek into the drawers and closets, and I will share organizational tips that may help you be more creative with your storage needs. See you then! |
