The ocean is a whole body of salt water covering nearly three-fourths of the earth's surface. It covers most of our planet, regulates our weather and climate, absorbs vast amounts of carbon dioxide, provides most of our oxygen, and feeds much of the human population. For many of us, the ocean is a place to dream, play, and find peace.
For the next few Mixed-Media Monday events, we will be traveling to the ocean and creating beach-inspired doodles with watercolors, pens, inks, and papers!

Before class, thicken some water with starch. We will be using methylcellulose to thicken the water, and will pour it into a glass baking dish so the paints will float on top. Watch the inspiring video below to learn a little about the process!
For this coming Monday's mixed-media event, we are continuing with our mindful doodling series. This time, we will be painting leaf shapes with watercolor and will doodle with a brush or pen.

Happy New Year, crafters! Last week we created brush rest bowls from air-dry clay, and this week we will finish them using mixed media techniques. If you missed the live class, you could catch it on our On-Demand page. All of our past events are listed there!
On Monday, January 4th at 11 AM MST, we will be painting our air-dry clay creations using layers of paint, and will make them look like ceramic!
Try to seal your dried clay pieces before class with a thin gesso coat and let them dry so you can paint along in class. See you Monday!

Feathers have deep meanings across many cultures, and because of a feathers’ connection to birds, they have often been a symbol of freedom. A bird soars through a never-ending sky. The mind can also soar transcending physical barriers into a world full of beauty, peace, and wonder.
We will be creating colorful feathers for Thursday's live class! Paper feathers are fun and easy to make. They can decorate your home or add a finishing touch to gifts, journals, and they make a beautiful bookmark. During class, you will paint, doodle, cut, and write on your paper feathers.
1 sheet 8x10 or larger 140 Lb or 300 lb watercolor paper or thick paper.
Watercolors, metallic or shimmery watercolors, acrylic paint, and colored pencils if you wish.
Pencil for tracing
Before class, you will need to prepare two sheets of thick paper or watercolor paper by drawing a few feathers. I have made a drawing for you to download, print, and trace if you wish to use it, otherwise, draw out some feather shapes onto the papers. The feathers don't need to look realistic.
Find a light source to put the thick paper over the feather drawing, and trace the design onto the paper. Paint a loose, colorful wash on one of the sheets covering the feather sketches. You can have bold colors, or soft, whatever you prefer. Just paint loosely and let the colors blend on the paper. Let it dry so you can detail it in class. You will be painting on the other sheet in class.
See you Thursday, August 20th, at 11 am MST!
A mixed media journal is your creative companion to document and explore the world around and within you. It can be a combination of thoughts, ideas, art, and craft and can express everyday life, hopes, and dreams. Journaling enhances creativity, sharpens visual skills, and improves eye-hand coordination. It is always evolving and is an excellent source of inspiration.
Keeping a journal is a powerful way to empower ideas, and a perfect place to create your reference for art and craft making.
Announcing the Creative Companion Event!
The Creative Companion Journal is an ongoing weekly event where you will have the opportunity to playfully experiment with art and craft supplies, and express your creativity inside the journal's pages. We will meet every week to explore a fun, creative technique. You may write, paint, draw, doodle, and stamp in your journal. You will add mementos, dried leaves, ephemera, acrylic paints, crayons, fabrics, fibers, monoprints, and other fun visual elements as we progress in our creative adventure. You will be encouraged to create one page a day using a visual prompt or theme of the week, and we will make time for everyone to share their creative journey. The goal will be to complete the Creative Companion Journal full of ideas to keep your creative practice fresh, inspirational, and fun. All levels of experience are welcome to join!
Prepare your Journal Kit
Your journal kit can be as basic or as elaborate as you wish. Below is a suggested supply list with the journal being the most important, of course! There are many journals to choose from, but you will enjoy working in one with thicker pages that will accept lots of media. You will need some marking and coloring tools such as pencils, markers, and paints to get started, and you can always add supplies if you are inspired to do so.
Save the Date!
The Creative Companion event begins Monday, August 31st, at 11 am MST, and creative exploration will continue every week until the pages of our journals have been filled. If aren't able to attend all of the events, that's okay! They will be available for you to view at any time on our On-Demand page. Be sure to register, and join us!
